  • A subscription import/export function would be much easier to implement but I don't think that's what users want when they say they want instance migration functionality.

  • Password managers are as important as adblockers in this day and age imo

Announcing OpenLemmyStats.org: Publicly Queryable Vote History + Other Hidden Data for Any Lemmy User!

  • Was with you until the money point. It's extremely easy to get this data and there will be many open source versions doing this thing.

But I agree that who upvoted a post shouldn't be federated.

  • for personal use, main reasons are you won't have to worry about instance admins making arbitrary decisions that you don't agree with, and no worries about server overload or downtime.

for making an instance for public, helping fediverse become a more viable alternative by spreading the load over more instances and helping it grow.

  • There's https://redditle.com/ if you just want reddit results. I've had it bookamrked and find it pretty useful.

  • While we can't expect meme communities to do any better since that's what memes are supposed to be, I hope news and tech communities are better in this regard.

  • All I want is that top comments under posts are something insightful and related to the post, and not just the same one liner boring jokes that keep getting upvoted for some reason.

  • Hey the image uploading at the backend of lemmy is a bit borked right now, restarting the server fixes it for a while so we restart our instance 5 times a day but it can still cause error sometimes, only thing right now you can do is try after a while, or use an image hosting site and post through there (for posts)

We are trying to find a permanent solution to this, sorry for the inconvenience.

  • welcome. On the side bar on the right there is a pencil button which you can click to edit the community and icon, banners and description.

  • Sounds straight from a black mirror episode.

  • That's a good question, I'll update the post with it an answer to it as well.

On liftoff, assuming you have signed in, at the very top you should see local@lemmy.fmhy.ml. if you click on it, you should see a drop down with instance names and 3 options of subscribed, local and all for each.

Subscribed would show you the feed with the communities you've subscried to, local will show you content from the communities hosted on your home instance, and all will show you every post from every instance we are federated with. That's basically the r/all equaivalent of lemmy and what you should browse to interact with other instances.

  • No, they are corrrect, I guess I should have added this part in the post too. The way federation works on lemmy is only after someone searches and subcribes to a community for the first time from another instance, only then is the information about an instance fetched.

This is done this way to prevent flooding and overloading the local instance with every single other instance at once (and to not waste bandwidth connecing with spam intances). So if you set up your own personal instance, you'll need to search interesting communities once yourself to view them later (or set up a script to do something like it).

  • Oops my bad, I'll update the post

  • Interesting thanks for linking it. I was under the impression that both platforms couldnt see each other yet. I'll edit the post.

  • There are many ways, best would be to either create a pull request on github or join us on our revolt instance.

You can create a post here toom but once (if) the community becomes more active it might get buried in other posts.

  • Sorry this is something happening on our instance for a while. Restarting the server fixed it for a while, so we do that 5 times a day, but obviously that's not the ideal solution. We are trying to find a permanent fix for this, sorry for the inconvenience.

  • comments and upvotes work similarly in the fact that only users from federated instances will show up.

But also yes there is a short delay before comments sync in general too aside from the above fact.
