  • I think karma whoring is a real problem for that site. Any post that reaches a popular critical mass gets slammed with people trying to make a quick joke or pun for upvotes, and so even commentary on popular news stories was filled with fluff, memes, or basic circlejerking. The karma system also incentivizes this really shitty dunking culture that is so bad for discourse.

    It might come here eventually if lemmy gets popular enough. But even if it does the platform as a whole is just more righteous and worthwhile. It doesn't exist as a commercial entity to drive engagement in order to satisfy advertisers, and that's something really unique and different in our day & age.

  • I'd be curious to know your experience with that game. Me and some friends have been playing it and the grind is just insane, to the point that I can't really enjoy it because progress feels so glacial. Whenever people speak positively about it I feel like I must be missing something.

Yes, let's alienate users. reduce our overall active users, and throw hissy fits at our mods who are volunteers without whom, this site cannot operate. That should establish confidence in the marketplace. I just don't understand the thinking here.

    People will say 'enshittification', well okay, but even on paper, all their moves have been so bad lately, and they don't seem to care. It's weird. Seems to me for example a platform with 100 users and 40% monetization is inherently more valuable than a platform with 40 users and 100% monetization. That's just my stupid opinion though.

  • I don't know if this helps you at all & I don't know what gear you're using, but Shure has a bluetooth receiver for their line of in ear monitors that plugs directly into the buds. It's called 'true wireless'. I have an old discontinued RMCE-BT2 model that works great and fidelity is indistinguishable from wired, to my ears, at least as far as connecting it to a phone goes. The new model is expensive unfortunately, so I don't know that it really solves your problem, but it's convenient & I can recommend it if it's within your budget and compatible with your gear.

  • For sure. Dark thought, but I wonder if gen xers and millennials on their death beds will experience a novel form of grief when effective therapies for terminal illnesses are cheap and available, but need to be administered before onset to be effective. Maybe there's a word for it in German.

  • For sure, all those reasons. I didn't really care what my karma total was, but I would look at other users karma before deciding to get into a debate just to get a sense if they were a troll, karma whore, or regular joe. Sort of gave you a quick picture of who you were talking to. FWIW, I don't miss it as a feature at all.

  • Well said. We're onto something good here. The discussions are great, & I think part of the reason is because comments aren't getting upvoted like crazy or downvoted into oblivion, nobody is karma whoring with stupid puns or references. Anyone here is just hanging out and shooting the breeze, it's goddamn refreshing. It won't keep that underground feel forever, but I'm glad to be here right now.

  • I am sympathetic to the frustrations people are having around private corporations owning & controlling something as important to communications as social media. & when these companies are run by CEOs who are... suspect, it's a reminder about just how fickle and agnostic to user experience their ecosystems really are. I mean in some sense, that's why we're here on the fediverse now, & not somewhere else. But I very much do not want the administration of public online spaces and networks to be the responsibility of the government. The potential for abuse is too great.

    It could be that the best solution for our moment in time is a handful of beneficent individuals running servers out of their closets. It's crazy, but it's kind of cool.

  • Interesting thoughts. I suppose Meta will collect what they want to collect, it's what they do, and this is all public discussion, anyone can collect it for any reason. And I don't doubt that their involvement in the fediverse is secretly nefarious in one way or another.

    Where I think our current situation is different from the Google/XMPP thing, is that, a bunch of platforms are going down the tubes really quickly and lots of people are looking for the next thing all at the same time. It gives a lot of room for a good platform like this one to gain ground rapidly. As far as I'm concerned, if for example instagram federated, and I could browse some good feeds outside of meta's app & privacy permissions hell, that would be a plus for me. If they subsequently pulled what Google did with XMPP and suddenly backed out, I wouldn't react by moving to instagram exclusively and I can't really see why any user would make such a move.

  • I care. Charging for high API use wasn't an unreasonable move in principle, just, the details were bullshit and it got rolled out in a totally donkey brained way. But that wasn't necessarily a deal breaker for me in and of itself. I stopped using reddit because of the temper tantrum & threats that the admins threw at mods and their coordination efforts.

    And anyway it's death by a thousand cuts. Over time, all these little changes to the platform slowly make it worse for the user. The big social media companies have completely lost touch. They're more concerned with these abstract concepts like engagement and growth, instead of focusing on nurturing a good place for users to be. Well, what do they think? That the users are hostage? That we can't leave?

  • The move toward heavily curated feeds is what made me leave twitter a few years ago. Tweets no longer showed up in temporal sequence. Likes frequently became retweets, & my feed filled up with things that distant contacts were liking, which was often far outside my realm of interests. Following an account didn't guarantee that everything they posted would show up in my feed. These changes just cannot have been motivated by people who used and enjoyed twitter, they made the service objectively less relevant, less interesting, and in every way worse for the user.

    That's what gives me hope & gets me excited about the fediverse, where, commercial services effectively get forked, & you can hang out in places with features that suit your tastes, populated with people who also value those features. I really like that. Overall it makes things fragmented, but, there are these cosy little niches that will only get better. I'm a noob to this whole thing but seems to me, as soon as a slick, easy to use global fediverse search engine is created, or something with that harmonizing effect comes along, this thing is going to go big.
