  • Thats true. And then America stopped. And then the people who had actual on-the-ground experiance died of old age. Its really another effect of the slow tragedy that is the auto industry

  • Thats quite true, but also political blockage prevents the projects from starting. With California high speed rail, the project is going. And we have found that, in addition to political stumbling blocks, California simply lacks access to the knowledge to build this, and must build that up. Its not 'instead of politics', its 'in addition to'.

  • If you look at the context of my comment, you will see I was replying to someone who, it seems, has confused the California high speed rail project with the hyperloop. The first is an actual thing that is being built, the second is a distraction.

As for comparing the situations, of course it can be done. We can look at how the twa countries built rail, see what are fundamental differences and what are things that can be learned.

  • This is misleadingly reductionist. California high speed rail has made consistant progess in that time. That progress has been slower than ourslowest expectations. It demonstrates the void of expertise the US has in rail megaprojects. However, that expertise is being built, slowly and painfully. Its still forward progress for a nation which tore up half its rail overthe last 50 years.

  • California high speed rail is an actual project which has actually been building actual rail since 2008. It is the only rail megaproject active in the United States. It has many challenges, none of them physics, some of which were mad worse by Musk's bullshit.

Asking for an actual comparison between the circumstances of the Chinese high speed rail network and the circumstances of the California High Speed Rail project is valid.

    This response reflects poorly

  • exactly this. If I need to do development, i'll use a jetbrains product. If i'm in a pure text editing situation, I want the most powerful thing for manipulating text, and I want it to be available.

  • Vim can have some IDE-like qualities, if you bolt enough plugins in to it, but by default it affords buttinx text in a file and manipulating it.

I woudn't classify it as an ide though.

  • 'legitimate government' isn't really a thing. Many recognized countries are ruled by hereditary governments, or by autocrats who gained power in a coup. The legitimacy of such governments, andthe nationhood of the states, is recognized by other countries based on the foreign policy (mostly self interest) of those other countries. So, if you want to guess who would recognize a Gaza nation with Hamas as the ruling clique, ask yourself what governments would benifit from doing that.

  • I literally cannot believe we are arguing about this bullshit when Ohio exists

  • This is cool

  • I work in software, and I used to look down on luddites. Then I learned what they actually stood for and now I agree with them.

  • Hmmmm

  • Theres a lot of people that pretend the opposite, as well. We are all biased towards the thing we like. Its obvious cities are popular, because they are expensive. Its also obvious suburbs are popular, because they alsoare axpensive.

What people mostly wish is that more city could be built, becausethe demand forcity living is still highar than that for suburbs.

  • Thingsthat go bicycle speed belong in the bike lane. Things that go faster go in the car lane. Things that go slower belong inthe people lane,

  • For those curious, this is a fireproofing wrap intended to help save the structure in the event of a forest fire.

  • Lamy safari is great! If you wanna try out bottle ink, look at the twsbi eco too. Same price range, real great writer

  • Haha I am too and still got sucked in

  • This policy suggestion differs from other prohibitions slightly, due to the mechanisms of addiction, and the existance of alternative nicotine delivery.

In the first factor, there is a prime age range during which addiction likelyhood is highest: ages 10 to 20. Beyond this range, succeptibility to addiction falls. By reducing the likelyhood of people in that range to encounter tobacco products, we can meaningfully reduce overall nicotine addiction inthe population.

The second factor is the existance of safer alternative nicotine delivery mechanisms. For those already addicted, more targeted mechanisms such as gum, patches, and even vaping can represent a reduced-harm alternetive to smoking.

Also, black market ciggarettes probably will be just as safe as they are now, since they will most likely be commercially produced for other countries and smuggled in. Its not like RJ Reynolds will start cutting Camels with coca leaves just cause they can't sell to 25 year olds.
