  • I feel like Twitter is just one of those sites where it's best consumed filtered through other people posting the good bits elsewhere

  • Strongly agree. Mastodon is alright and I use it a little, but the twitter-type format never really worked for me. I feel like when I have to follow individual people I usually end up either following no one or being forced to follow people who post things that interest me sometimes but a lot of the time post things that really don't. Following particular topics or threads just seems much more natural to me; I can look at exactly what interests me and nothing more.

  • Does that really make it totally apolitical though?. Like obviously it's not inherently attached to a wide reaching political ideology, but it still is political in the same way that any free software is kind of political.

  • Don't listen to anything on my phone but definitely agreed, I much prefer having the songs on my computer and using ncmpcpp to play them (and with a cool visualiser too).

  • I know it had its issues but I was pretty sad that the LG G5 sort of compromise where you got the removable battery while still not "looking cheap" never really went anyway.

  • Devs don't get paid less just because I pirated a game I would never have bought otherwise

  • Phone bad.

Like they're objectively pretty useful but I find the experience of using one to just kinda suck and I avoid it as much as I can. I'd much much rather use a laptop or ideally my desktop if that's at all possible. No idea how some people manage so much time using their phones

  • I feel like if you want to boycott a game but really can't resist the urge to play it the least you could do is just pirate it instead of buying it

  • I really really want to learn (Standard) Arabic, but I've never really gotten around to it yet because language-wise there's always been another language which is more practical at the time for me to learn (currently Dutch).

  • By words you mean slurs?

  • Definitely not a thing for everyone but I find conlanging (a conlang is a constructed language) to be pretty fun and it could be for other people who are also somewhat into linguistics. For me it's a good excuse to learn more about linguistics and also to apply it trying things out in my own languages.

  • Yeah that's understandable. Usually I don't have more than maybe 4 windows open anyway though so I generally feel like the loss of space is relatively minimal (especially on a desktop monitor which is bigger anyway)

  • I don't think they did, it's a meme about gay people walking quickly

  • I'm more of a window manager person myself (Qtile to be precise), and I imagine that's not really what you're looking for here, but DE-wise from what I've tried I like KDE and XFCE the most

  • I've tried Mastodon a few times, and that was my first exposure. The first time, which was I don't even remember when, I joined mastodon.social, kinda got lost and never found anyone to follow and ended up just forgetting about it.

The 2nd was in 2020 after cth got banned and I remember someone in the Discord mentioning an instance I thought might be more interesting, so I joined it and it was definitely a better experience but again I just ended up forgetting about it after a while. Also when I came back later to check in on things I found the instance no longer existed.

I joined a third time around this time last year when some of my friends decided to join and I've used it a little more, but it's still pretty on and off, so I think part of the problem is just that I'm not super into the Twitter-like style of things. Having to follow individual people ends up feeling kinda tedious and since almost no one only posts things I find interesting, I end up either following no one or following enough people my feed is largely filled with things that don't interest me.

Aside from Mastodon I haven't really tried any of the others, but Lemmy definitely seems like it works better for me, preferring to follow topics and interests rather than individual people most of the time. I have actually looked at Lemmy before a few times, and liked it, but found it hard to get over the relative lack of activity, so I hope that's changing (and it seems like it might be).

  • EU4 lol, and by far. At least that's among I have hour counters for. I'd guess I've played more Minecraft because I played that sooo much when I was younger and still sometimes do occasionally.
