  • I live in Alberta where most of our power comes from natural gas. I'm also an emissions and sustainability engineer. I did the math on environmental payback for an EV where I live and the EV is WILDLY better for the environment despite the power potentially coming from fossil fuels.

If you tell me roughly where you live I can calculate emissions per kilometre/mile including the energy that goes into manufacturing the vehicle.

There's absolutely jurisdictions where EVs don't make much difference - but most places they do.

(large scale power generation is pretty effecient and most jurisdictions have some renewables in the mix. A car's gas engine is much lower efficiency most places)

  • The courage of these folks is pretty inspiring.

  • I still don't get the butane reference? (kidding)

  • Totally agree.

  • Trump pay for something? Yea right...

  • I sure wouldn't say 'all'. The first years of your mortgage you are paying the bank more in interest than you are knocking off the principal.

A $300k home with 20% down and an interest rate of 3.5% on a 25 year amortization schedule will see the buyer paying $8k in interest versus $6k towards the principal at the start. Over the course of the mortgage, the $300k home will cost $420k thanks to the $120k in interest the bank takes.

  • I'm okay as long as I don't doom scroll too much.

I'm Canadian and middle aged. I was braced for a rough Trump 2.0, but the last month has truly exceeded expectations for suck. Our country is under economic attack by our biggest trading partner. Human rights and trying to help and support each other are suddenly considered bad things. Our window to address climate change is snapping shut as our leaders around the world move in the wrong direction. I'm feeling really good about my decision to not have kids at least.

On the plus side, my sick cat is responding to treatment, and my partner and I have just set up a nursery - we're going to start fostering wee kiddos whose families are going through rough spots. I've got some financial flexibility so I'm treating myself to a stack of coffee gift cards each week that I hand out to folks who look like they could use it. Sorta makes my day to be able to make sure someone unhoused gets a warm drink and some food.

  • Dagnabbit - I went all in on Proton as well. Why is it so hard to find an email provider that respects privacy and isn't run by people with 'problematic' views (i.e. people who wish people like me didn't exist)

  • I wanted kids when I was younger, but wasn't ready to give up my freedom. Once I was ready for kids the world (and the future in particular) looks so bleak that it doesn't seem fair to the theoretical kiddo to say 'hey, here's a dumpster fire - good luck'. Instead I babysit for my friends and family, spoil the kids around me, and sleep in on the weekend. I also have more time for activism and trying to ensure a brighter future for kiddos.

    No regrets.

  • There's a difference between defending oneself and engaging in collective punishment and genocide. I am Jewish and the descendent of holocaust survivors. Not in my name.

  • Nicely done! Did you wind in the barrel adjusters at the same time? I find barrel adjusters let me really maximize my procrastination ;)

  • I LOVE that idea! One of our resident cats is a pain to give meds to so I'll give it a try!

And yes, Bo is half (or so) Bengal. He came to us completely feral but needed those meds so he didn't go the TNR route. He's turned into a super friendly guy who craves getting pets - just took a bit to get there. He's also basically vocal chords on four legs - sings all day long.

If anyone is interested in adopting, he's listed with MEOW in Calgary, Canada!

  • 66% of our resident cats are on prescription diets. Total non-issue. I think people just worry about other unanticipated costs.

  • My partner and I foster a lot of cats. Some of the sweetest cats take forever to get adopted just because they aren't kittens anymore. One of our fosters has been with us for almost three years now - just because he isn't a kitten and needs some inexpensive meds sprinkled on his food once a day.

  • How did I not think of that?

  • She's discovered that she can get 'mom time' by jumping up on the desk we have in the room because oh man, do they never let her rest otherwise.

  • Fines clearly don't work. We need criminal penalties.

  • Yep - I identify as male, but I put he/they in my email signature because I a) want to signal active support for the trans community and b) don't really think about my own gender much and kind of like de-gendering my language wherever possible.

  • When asked how many customers would be affected, the company said that while precise numbers are not yet available, up to four customers may be impacted. "I would like offer our sincere apologies to Aunt Sue, Uncle Frank, Mike, and Jodi."
