  • I have had the same problem with some VPNs, but sometimes it works. Maybe your instance admin can identify if they allow any VPNs, or you could try to move to an instance that is more lenient?

  • I recommend "Strong". I have their set top box, but I'm sure they have a stick too. It is just android TV though. Jellyfin works fine. VPN too.

  • I don't see why that would help. But if everyone's empathy increased by 50% of the average amount of empathy, that might help. (Not that it is measurable, but this is obviously fantasy)

  • Right, the eCall black box is a perfect example of how this other stuff could be implemented, at least according to my layman understanding. There is a set of standardized minimum functionality and a set of optional functionality. All related to telematics control. There could be a requirement that manufacturers use a clear standardized interface for entertainment/comfort and a clear separation between those and critical functions, so that those could be handled by user replaceable software/hardware. Feels like that would be a step up from what we have now, where I've been in a modern car (2024 BYD) and connecting androidauto caused the entertainment computer to crash and the dashboard to go blank for about 60 seconds while I was driving down the highway. I can understand including a display buffer to push some entertainment content onto the dashboard, but there should be separation.

    Next step after all this would be to ask what parts of this really benefit from being proprietary. Maybe if we had better standards between components we would get better repairability.

  • My cat did this for years with two exceptions (blueberries and peas, which must be stolen, played with, and lost under the couch). Then one day I had brisket. His eyes got huge and he immediately tried too steal it and eat it, so I guess after four years I finally passed his test for "this is food".

  • It was argued, yes, but that is a state supreme court decision, not binding in any other state, and there is still no law that says this is true. Friedman wouldn't have bothered arguing about it in 1962 if it was unquestionably federal law or already settled by 1919. It is only convention.
