  • Staple crops aren't just your cheap empty calories. Legumes, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, soybeans, onions, and some very healthy grains are all staple crops. Even the humble potato is fine, though many preparations of it are unhealthy. Take this soup:

    • Lentils
    • Carrots
    • Onions
    • Celery
    • Potatoes
    • Beans
    • Vegetable broth made from the odds and ends
    • Herbs & spices
  • I was trying to get myself prepared for realistic disaster scenarios. For us, that is earthquakes and cold snaps. And in my mind, realistic means how do I both ready myself and work with my community?

So I got a book on prepping. The titled seemed innocuous enough. Unfortunately, it was one of the crazy bug out into the woods and go eat squirrel stew sort of prepper books. Totally worthless for anything practical. The best thing I can say for it was that it was an e-book, so it didn't cost much.

  • Politician, perhaps. But I'm going to have to put a spotlight on Jonathan Mitchell, who came up with the structure behind the Texas Heartbeat Bill, which did an end run around judicial review by allowing enforcement via civil action by damn near anyone. The usual way to legally dispute a potentially unconstitutional law is to sue the government officials that enforce it, but because there wasn't a specific person there was no real way to bring it to the judicial branch.

  • Yup, can't get rid of someone like Trump if enough of the population is either willing or eager to go along with him.

  • Everything she does will be timed to coincide with the heat death of the universe.

  • And let's hope he lives to see her elected.

  • I just looked this up. The idea is called an ethnic religion, where a religion is closely tied to an ethnicity as opposed to universal religions like Christianity or Islam. It's far from the only one, but it is the one that has the most mind share, at least in the West.

  • Now wait until you hear about skinteeth.

  • He's also refusing to meet with Biden. This is about politics for DeSantis, so that he can complain that Biden and Harris aren't doing their jobs.

  • I wouldn't exactly call that assassination unprovoked. That specific general had led the Quds Force in operations that caused the deaths of hundreds of US soldiers and the injuries of tens of thousands of other soldiers. Then there's the many, many other operations that the Quds Force have engaged in as part of Iran's proxy wars in the region. He definitely earned a spot on the shit list.

Was it a wise decision to target him? I don't know. But he had done plenty to deserve his fate.

  • They're still helpful in sorting out a 600 calorie meal that's going to keep someone on track to lose weight versus a 1200 calorie meal that is going to make them gain weight. Even if it's not exact, it's a useful guideline.

  • Wonder Bread is just gross junk food. Also, if you consult the label again, it's worse than that. The 5g added sugar is for 57g of bread, so it's nearly 10% sugar by mass.

There are good brands here. I usually get Dave's Killer Bread. It still has some added sugar, but there are varieties with fairly small amounts.

  • Oh, sure, I've been there. Am there. And Reddit may have gotten to that point with these features where maintenance costs overtook the costs of removing them.

  • I was ready to hear something like a story from someone who had signed onto a medical trial and was upset the trial was ending. Nope, instead an absurdly short support period that seemingly is fed by the same culture of replacement over repair that has infected our economy.

  • Code that exists still needs to be updated and maintained. It interacts with the rest of the code. Sure you can leave it lying around, but at a certain point the technical debt is going to catch up to you.

  • Meh. Net worth can be volatile in the upper echelons of wealth. It's often based on volatile assets. He's still giving away plenty. I'm seeing a budget of $8.6 billion in 2024 for the Gates Foundation.

Also, his wealth doesn't need to be spent within his lifetime to remain true to the pledge. The Gates Foundation can continue functioning long after his death, much like other foundations like the Carnegie Foundation.

  • Look at all our WONDERFUL job creators amassing their dragon hoards!

  • I'm not sure who is doing the calculations here, but the latest estimates I'm seeing for Gates have him down a bit for the year. He also is down after is divorce from Melinda, which included splitting off a good chunk of money for her own personal and philanthropic use.
