  • This might not work if your phone still has Googled apps on it. (As I understand, OP still has them.)

  • As @unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de already pointed out, there might be a misunderstanding of what MicroG "is". (Or maybe you are fully aware, but it is not clear to us...)

MicroG is NOT just an app you install & go. It is a deeply embedded part of your system you REPLACE the entire Google Service stack (GAPPS) with.

In theory, it is possible to "ungoogle" an existing system and then integrate MicroG, but it needs certain technical knowhow, like hacking around with adb, rooting, signature spoofing, ...

In other words. To setup MicroG "manually" is not necessary an easy task to make it work correctly. But if you want to tinker with it, by all means: go for it! But be prepared to encounter problems.

All technical info can be found on the site I linked you previously under the "installation" section: https://github.com/microg/GmsCore/wiki/Installation

However, a more convenient and much straight forward way to use MicroG would be to install a new Android System (i.e. "ROM") that already has GAPPS replaced with MicroG. Unexposedhazard already pointed out some systems. My recommendation would be "eOS" or "iode OS". Both of them come with a very user friendly configuration out of the box, so there is no need to tinker with it that much after installation.

Final note: Not all phones can be degoogled or flashed with another ROM. E.g. check the supported devices of the ROMs.

And what ever you do: Make backups of your data before fiddeling around with your ROM or any GAPPS. Things can break very fast. 😉

    Have fun!

  • One alternative might be to host your own Nextcloud Server. (There are providers that will host them for you for under 10 € a month.) This solution might be a bit overkill, but you would get a fancy cloud storage solution that you can use as an alternative for other services as well.

Another option might be "Magic Wormhole". But this might be a bit techy and not as user friendly as other solutions. But it can be fun (if you are a but techy) is basically peer-to-peer. https://magic-wormhole.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

Another alternative to look into might be "Send". https://alternativeto.net/software/send/about/

  • IMHO, problem with Diaspora is that they refused to adopt ActivityPub, so federation is very limited. And it certainly is not as buzzing as it was 10 years ago.

  • Generally, I heard Bonfire will be the "next big thing" in that space - but you are right. There isnt THE ONE, yet.

  • You are aware that the default Mastodon interface has a tab called "trending"?

(You might need to enable it first under "Preferences > Appearance > Discovery".)

  • Arch comments in 3, 2, 1 ...

  • You should look for more privacy respecting alternatives to your apps. These stats are NOT a good sign!

  • Ah, OK.

So Vikunja itself is "just" an application. And it needs to be executed somewhere. So hosting it on a webserver like your own website would be the "intended way".

However, web hosting can be a little bit complex, if you have absolutely no prior knowledge about that. So, I wouldn't recommend it for novices. (But, it can be a fun hobby if you want to learn something new.)

But fortunately, you don't necessarily need to do the work of hosting it yourself on your own. Other friendly people are already running Vikunja on their server and are providing it as a free service to others. (Check out the two links I provided in my original reply.)

You can sign up on their instance and use it like any other web service. So, I would recommend to open an account at one of their servers for the purpose of trying out Vikunja. If you like it, you can still think about registering somewhere else or hosting it on your own.

  • What is it, that is not clear to you exactly? More the whole "run on your own server" thing or just "how vukunja works" on an application level?

(I will try to explain if you want and if I can.)

  • Wow, never had that book on my radar. Plot sounds pretty crazy!

  • Naahh. Probably not. 😅

But I'm not sure if the UI will be displayed correctly in other languages. But I added the links to two trustworthy servers, if anyone wants to try.

  • Joplin is more of a "notes" app. But yes, you can do todo's in it quite fine.

  • CoMaps is an app that focuses on user friendliness. But it might lack some "power features".

Osmand is great when you really want to tweak your map experience. But it can be a little complicated for the occasional user.

An somewhat complete overview off apps & tools that are using OSM data can be found here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Android_applications

If you can't find a location/address with your OSM app, check if the data even exists on OSM. If it is not there yet, you can check out StreetComplete, which is a cool way to add, check & fix the upstream OSM data.

  • In my experience, it doesn't matter where you are on the internet, you will always be faced with idiots who try to bring you down.

Don't let them win. Be yourself and politely ignore (and block) the hell out of these people. It is YOUR time and you should be able to live it the way YOU want it.

Best of luck and hope to see you around.

  • It is basically a meme space for people on the spectrum. It has some "circlejerk" vibes to it, if you are familiar with this genre of subs.

    The subreddit description reads:
