  • It's a result of compassion fatigue. When the first dead migrant children washed up on the Greek coast on people were appalled and transfixed. But the next month there were more dead bodies, and then more. Eventually people stop caring.

I'm old enough to remember "Live Aid". When Bob Geldof got up on stage and said we were going to end world hunger people really believed it was possible. Since then there have been dozens more famines in Ethiopia, and the deaths run to the tens of millions. And now no-one mentions them.

  • The people involved with the search had assumed this was the case all along. Sudden loss of both navigation and communication strongly indicates a catastrophic event.

  • Temporary is fine if it buys us the time to make the switch to permanent and sustainable carbon neutrality. The problem now is that rate of progress toward net zero is far below where it should be. Wishful thinking won't change that .

  • I think that everyone involved in the search already assumed it was an implosion. The sub lost comms and navigation simultaneously which strongly suggested a catastrophic event.

  • "The" Church? Surely it should be "a" church unless we've time travelled back to the middle ages.

Regardless.. who cares what these irrelevant throwbacks to an age of superstition think?

  • I think it's probably premature to call this the beginning of a new era. The Palestinians have been fighting Israel since 1965 .. and 50 years later they've achieved absolutely nothing. Palestinians are no closer to having a homeland and the Israelis continue to build settlements in defiance of world opinion. Worse,l the Israelis charm offensive has actually brought some Arab states on to their side.

There is no military solution to this for the Palestinians. The best they can do is to deny security to the Israelis .. but at what cost? A generation of Palestinian children have grown up knowing nothing but occupation. It's time to admit that the military strategy has been a collosal failure. This fight can only be won by being smarter, and the first step is renouncing violence and focusing on a PR campaign to move public opinion inside and outside Israel.

  • Every April 1st by tradition people posted actual anime titties.

  • I'm just waiting for the class action suit for back pay.

  • Hopefully the whole debacle will focus people's minds on the real problem. The US government is spending more than it is taking in, and that's a problem with only 2 possible solutions (continuing to raise the debt ceiling doesn't count as a solution). We must reduce spending or increase revenue by raising taxes. There is nothing else to discuss.. kicking the can down the road only hurts us more in the long run.

  • Spending money on worthwhile endeavors is a good thing, but you have to have the money to spend in the first place. If you don't and you just kick the can down the road it puts a much heavier burden on future generations. We need to get serious about raising taxes on those who do not pay their fair share.

  • Mali was the first African country to give away a tld for free. That's probably why it was used.

  • "Genocide" is a word that should be used sparingly. Just like homicide is used to describe killing a person, genocide means killing a people. Persecution of minorities, though horrific does not always rise to the level of genocide.

In the struggle between democracy and dictatorship, it is crucial that democracies tell the truth in plain language. Dictatorships will always lie and obfuscate to conceal their true nature. Democracies can tell it like it is. Bear this in mind when deciding whether to call something a genocide.

  • It's only a problem if you allow your personal worldview to affect your moderation.. a tendency that sadly most moderators have. I've found lemmy.ml to be one of the more permissive instances where viewpoints of all sides are permitted. Unfortunately many others (you know who you are) are in danger of becoming walled gardens and echo chambers.

  • If you are so fragile that you need to be protected from a troll then maybe the internet is not the right place for you.

  • I don't know how "Liberal" came to be synonymous with fragile snowflake. People have been misusing the word for ages .. especially in the US. The original Liberal (and I'm proud to claim to be one) puts free speech front and center of their world view. It's the cornerstone of democracy. And free speech also means the freedom to offend .. it's a price well worth paying.

  • Lemmy is more than worth it just for the lack of "he gets us" ads alone.

  • Shadow banning is Orwellian . something you might expect from the CCP instead of a supposedly progressive online forum. If you're going to ban someone at least have the decency to let them know they are banned.

  • Shadow banning.. one of the most Orwellian moderation tools ever.
