I grew up hearing that in my home state of Hawai'i, where you have large swaths of poor folks - mostly of indigenous Hawaiian descent - born into and dying in poverty. Generation after generation, in small towns surrounded by literal wilderness (state forest preserves) with no jobs, a shite public school budget, and connected to civilization by a single road. And the islands are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, so there's no escape. You can't just drive off to Mexico or anything like that to start a new life, if you are born poor then you are trapped.
This "leaving it in the past" bullshit has only made the inequity worse... but everyone's been conditioned to think with a toxic boomer mentality, so reparations for indigenous Hawaiians has never been a serious topic of discussion. It's like, there's no sense of compassion whatsoever. Nobody gives a shit, and that's the most infuriating part.
That would have been preferable to a holodeck simulation. Ugh, what a weak way to go out, especially considering how great the rest of that last season was. Berman and Braga should've let Manny Coto (the showrunner, whom they hired to run the show, FFS) write and direct the finale, too bad ego had to get in the way.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean it as an insult. I wanted to stress that the utility aspect of being able to heal is a major draw. If you're starting out, you don't really know what's waiting for you, and that minor heal looks like a smart choice.
Full disclosure: the first character I created for any RPG ever was a Ranger. I was playing the NES port of Ultima III, didn't want to get my ass handed to me, and the minor heal abilities looked appealing. That was...jeez, in the late 80s I think?
@ummthatguy@lemmy.world oof, that's rough. Some of us do have to learn the hard way, for a number of reasons. Good for your friend, it's no small feat.
@ummthatguy I also wish I could. Been on the wagon for a long time. One becomes ten, and -- like ADHD -- it's not necessarily a matter of willpower. Drinking is a destructive variable for me, and I can't have that in my life.
But thank you, I do appreciate the suggestion. It likely wouldn't hurt if my brain were wired a little differently. I'm sure there's a Kelly in a parallel universe who is able to take your advice and is enjoying a nice Glenfiddich on the rocks.
@verity_kindle, I feel your pain. Even the most trivial and mundane tasks become overwhelming/impossible, even for seemingly easy things like self care. It is so hard to even function as a human being, and it really sucks.

Good lord, I no longer have to press up, press crtl-left a bunch of times, then type sudo enter space anymore. And I can give it an easy-to-remember alias like 'resu' or 'redo'! Ahahaha, this changes everything! Thank you!!
