I think if Reddit was really good, 90% of the people here would not have a good reason to use Lemmy. I was on Lemmy before the blackout & it wasn't great; had I plugged it then, many would be reluctant to switch. Now, it is amazing, and Reddit ensured that Lemmy got a nice influx of users to make that happen :)
The reason why it is so hard for this group of self-proclaimed competent individuals to just swallow their pride & come out with an actual legitimate apology is because they are, at the end of the day, a boys club. I hope Terren cleans the place up big time.
It is difficult to discern whether this is malice or Linus just being too incompetent, emotionally directed, & aloof to actually run LMG. He should have thought much more carefully before scaling to where they are now.
Baffling seeing the "well, [chromium based browser] has adblock in [X Y Z] form." Use the browser that will actually prevent this from disaster from happening again, which is Firefox.
The great lengths people will go to just marginally improve their user experience. Just use a FOSS app that's 99% of what Sync is but doesn't have this BS
What about FOSS software is inherently jank? This is a stupid take that's likely informed by some bad past experiences, of which I've had many with proprietary crapware.
It is easier to find crap FOSS software because it is easier to make & maintain a FOSN project when you're less competent & you don't have a strategy for long term success. Proprietary software relies on for-profit motives to improve, while FOSS software relies on user feedback & community incentives. This is why, while the average quality of service from FOSS programs is potentially worse, the best QoS is usually from a FOSS program. See Elk for Mastodon for a fantastic example of premium quality.
