I don't know what they did but I want to be in control of what I get to see. Unless it's anything illegal I'd rather not let someone else choose for me
My brother was working for a US-based VPN fairly recently. Handled reporting bugs and doing QA testing with the software as well as customer feedback. In one of the internal tools, there was a "folder" that contained all the subpoenas from local law enforcement as well as from the FBI. If the gov't asks for info about a specific user, you hand it to them on silver platter.
Vpns are not anonymous. If your government is not censoring the websites you visit, there's no need to use a vpn. It's not gonna make your any more private than you already are. Use tor if you care about privacy
I'm with you on this ... somewhat. I'm tired of everything being political everywhere. I hate how every discussion goes down with politics. One way to "achieve" this would be if you or someone like you made a lemmy instance where nothing political would be allowed and we were to browse that locally. I myself hate both left wing and right wing equally so I'd love a place where I'm free of politics.
The other way is much simpler, which is you browse through communities and find what's political and what's not and subscribe to them and only browse through your subscriptions.
However it's neither possible nor justified to not allow people to get political. 99% of the internet is made of politics and sex
