  • Thanks for the great work! According to Christian the revenue received by reddit per user per year was $1.50 (optimistically). I just set up a donation on liberapay of $15 per year with the idea that if 10% of Lemmy users donate $15 per year then Lemmy will receive the same income per user as Reddit.

  • Hungary, Austria, Greece added to the Economist’s list of Putin’s ‘useful idiots’ in Europe

  • Not so much a list but three paragraphs:

    Mr Putin’s enablers include several European governments. Viktor Orban, the prime minister of Hungary since 2010, has been the most obvious. The populist strongman has repeatedly criticised Western support for Ukraine and continued Hungary’s imports of Russian gas. His government also refuses to allow the transit of weapons given to Ukraine by Hungary’s fellow members of nato and the eu. Next-door Austria has, more quietly but equally profitably, largely sat out the struggle, too, citing its non-membership of nato and self-appointed role as a bridge between East and West, offering little aid to Ukraine even as its trade with Russia has surged.

    Greece, another eu member, is complying with the eu’s sanctions, but has balked at tightening any further those on shipping Russian oil, perhaps because Greek firms happen to pocket so much from the trade. Only recently and under heavy American pressure did Cyprus, an offshore financial haven, shut down some 4,000 local bank accounts held by Russians. Facing less pressure, non-eu countries such as Turkey and Serbia don’t even bother to disguise the lucrative back-door service they provide to Russia.

    Some countries have twisted seemingly noble intentions into policies that warm Mr Putin’s heart. Citing its vaunted neutrality, Switzerland has wielded arcane local laws to block the supply of arms to Ukraine, including 96 mothballed Leopard tanks sitting in Italy that happen to belong to a private Swiss firm. Scoring repeated own-goals with freedom of speech principles, police in Sweden have green-lighted public burnings of the koran. Not only has this hugely irked Muslim-majority Turkey, which wields a veto over Sweden’s bid to join nato. Mr Putin himself gleefully trolled the Swedes. On a trip to Dagestan before the Eid holiday at the end of June, Mr Putin had himself filmed tenderly holding a koran, as he explained that under Russian law it is a crime to desecrate holy things.

  • Absolutely. Things have improved over the years, there is an official chrome extension for keychain that works on windows (although I’ve never used it so can’t comment on how well it works) it’s also possible to export your keychain database (although only using a Mac). The worst thing about keychain now is that, on iOS, it’s only accessible through settings which makes accessing 2FA codes a pain. I think keychain should be it’s own app.

    Which password manager do you use? I am open to trying an alternative but having all my passwords in one place is really scary so I struggle to trust a third party.

  • This is really greedy imo. Even with inflation the price of storage per gb has decreased by 90% since 2009. Big downside to being so vendor locked in. It’s not like I can use something like b2 buckets as a replacement.

  • iPad Mini or iPad Air for a student?

  • Replacing a computer with an iPad is already difficult and will be frustrating at times. I would definitely get the air. Imagine wanting to reference a web page or pdf while you type in another application, in split screen mode your app window will be half the size and on an air that’s already going to feel very cramped.

  • Wow lemmy.ml feels a lot faster now. Compared to lemm.ee on 0.17.4 the difference is huge and lemm.ee was already very snappy. Excellent work!

  • 📣 Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️

  • The decline of Reddit is a great shame. But the model of social media companies needing to IPO and make profit always hurts users in the long run. When Reddit do IPO more decisions will be made that make the experience worse for users simply because the interests of the platform owners will no longer be aligned with the interests of the users. We can’t know how things will work out but at least the fediverse model is new and is theoretically more sustainable.
