  • It's nice they named it after the king. He gets so little in life

  • Even more annoyingly, they're using it wrong. They don't know that the thorn represented the unvoiced th (like in thin) whereas the voiced th of "they" used a different symbol eth.

  • Okay, so your bill is going to be a LOT higher for the next few years to pay for them to be built. Look, under our capitalist system there isn't a way of having on-demand energy at all times without a cost to the consumer. I'd rather it were seen as an essential that the state provides, but there you go

  • Until the public are prepared to turn devices off whenever they're told, we need readily available sources of energy that can be fired up at a moment's notice to fill the gaps between demand and what the renewables are providing. That's done with gas, and so we all have to pay to keep a handful of gas stations operational. The alternative is that you turn appliances off on still cloudy days, which I suspect you'd like less than your current energy bill

  • The thing is, that was because of another bad Google decision years ago. They decided to downrate short pages in the search results (such as a page with a nice simple recipe on it), and people realised they got no hits unless they padded the page with guff.

  • How many incidents of cars being used as weapons is it going to take before we admit they're dangerous and keep them away from where people are found?

  • A good UK example is Ethex. There you can say "Here's my money" and lend to small sustainable projects. I've lent money to a community energy project, for example, and am getting a 6% return on that

  • Not OP, but I'm really enjoying it because it's light and stable, and the set of MX tools it comes with are great. Their backup tool is so good that as my old laptop started to die I was easily able to transfer my entire setup to a totally different computer and pick up exactly where I'd left off

  • PR is Labour's opportunity to leave a truly meaningful legacy. But I'm sure they'll continue to be utterly hubristic, refuse to change anything on the off-chance the entire population suddenly changes their minds, and get wiped out at the next General while saddling us with Life President Farage

  • And a lot pf those wouldn't be up there if US broadband providers had just got on with providing a good service. If they had, we almost certainty wouldn't have Starlink

  • Why doesn't he have the courage simply to say Brexit was a mistake? Everyone who disagrees with that has long abandoned Labour and saying it - something I'm sure he believes - would lose him zero votes and potentially gain him more than zero

  • I'm old enough to remember the first, when it didn't even have a number. I also owned one of the single-digit ones. God I'm old

  • You can't do it overnight, no. But you can rapidly agree that it needs to be done

  • The cost of employing staff isn't related to the cost of what people eat - it's a function of how long the restaurant is open and how busy it is. It doesn't make sense that I pay more for the staff if I order a £40 bottle of wine versus a £20 bottle. If you're going to make customers pay separately like this,it should be a cover charge per head

  • I recently bought a (different brand of) smart telescope and these things are great. Obviously the light-gathering capacity is much lower than traditional astrophotography setups, but the ease of use is incredible. Kudos to the engineers who make these things.

  • Lumo, from Proton (Switzerland, I believe)

  • We also need to think about OP's potential shipmates, who might not benefit from being out at sea with a rootless suicidal person. It would be more responsible for OP to get their head straight before locking themselves away with a handful of strangers miles from anywhere

  • I think the best model would be that you top up an account and pay some small amount per search. That's also a bit more transparent, and directly linked to use
