It takes a lot of mental gymnastics to believe that's a controversial opinion. Most people will never meet a billionaire in their lifetime, let alone become one.

My mom's friend fell for one of those scams and paid something like $30 for some mystery seeds online because they were advertised on facebook as flowers shaped like cat faces. The website also claimed they were in the Bromeliad family, but the advertised flowers looked nothing like bromeliads. These scammers prey on people who take everything at face-value.
It isn't, but not all scientists can maintain scientific integrity when faced with significant external pressures (from people like RFK, for example). Those that can't dont stay scientists for long.
All findings can eventually be reproduced or disproven, but not without time and money. In the short term, trust and credibility is paramount.
