  • I've been (gently) persuading my friends and family to move away from meta platforms for years; until now mostly they don't care about the concerns I have and obviously I can't make them. Now (this week) is the first time I feel like they're starting to listen so I'm cautiously optimistic. I know a few people who have left Twitter in the last year having been big users (myself being one of them), hopefully the same reasoning will resonate with them again.

  • I'm the reverse of you actually, as a child it never occurred to me that you could just build the mouse trap without playing the game. So I exclusively played it properly and now I feel a bit stupid.

  • I don't distrohop much these days because I'm happy with where I am. But I actually enjoy having a clean start once in a while; going back and experiencing the defaults for a time helps clarify which customisations are actually really useful and which ones I'm just stuck in a rut with which happens a lot more than I usually expect. Of course I back up all my data/media and move that across, but configurations I like to approach with a clean slate. It's quite freeing to know that I can just wipe and reinstall my system at any time without much difficulty.

  • The only way I've worked out how to even save Instagram images locally is using the page information (ctrl+i) Media tab in Firefox and sort through it to find it there. Terrible for an image hosting website.

  • There are two sides to the coin, just as you can chose which instances to use, they're free to run their instance how they like, which is how it should be in my opinion. I think it's a bit strong to call it censorship; it's their website, their servers, and if enough people don't like it they can just not post there. This is the same freedom we had with old-style forums, because there was no monopoly in many cases you could select a forum based on if you liked how it was run.

    You're right, they have moderation control over lemmy.world posts, but it's still your decision to post there. If you feel that strongly about it you can even chose an instance that doesn't federate with lemmy.world, they exist.

    You'll have to sign up for a new account, yes, but is that a big loss? I mean there's no karma here, your existing posts and account won't go away, it'll just not be the main account you log into any more. I personally think it's not a bad idea to have accounts on a few instances, I've moved around through several.

  • Lots of red flags about this project, the website seems to be primarily fixated on pointing out how "bad" Thunderbird is, which isn't a good look. Thunderbird works fine for me, this seems all a bit toxic.

    I think I disagree there, clothes that are clean enough to be worn for another day aren't necessarily clean enough to be stored over a period of time. Think of it like food; there are leftovers that are probably OK to eat the next day but you would probably would want to treat them separately from your fresh food.
