Ah yes, the famously communist Russian Federation. The RF is nakedly an imperial fascist regime that doesn’t even have communist window dressing, it boggles the mind that self-proclaimed communists and anti-imperialists support them.

    Without having an immortalized cell line like this genetics would have taken even longer to get going tho, and she's actually one of the few people whose genes will be preserved for near eternity. Creepy, but it's closer to actual immortality than any of us will ever be.

  • You are right that a big amount gets released back when a tree dies, but it also feeds microorganisms which live in the soil and which enrich the soil itself, increasing the carbon content of the soil. Also, especially in wetlands and coastal areas plant material can sink underwater and get preserved on the sea floor, leading to sequestration, and explaining the higher sequestration rate compared to terrestrial forests.

    The "sweeter" smell can have multiple reasons, but having an disturbed gut microbiome is the most likely cause. Gut infections in general can cause both.

    Some people are also very bad at digesting specific foods. I cannot eat oats, at least if I want to have social contacts the next 2 days.

  • The first thing I downloaded at home was Star Wars Imperial march using a 56k modem. But before that a colleague of my father made a fair bit of money using his relatively fast internet connection to download games and apps from newsgroups, effectively running a subscription service offering 1 CD each with programs and games per month. I still have the Mp3, but the CDs are long gone.

    Edit: I just recalled that on one of the CDs the game Battlecruiser 3000AD had a virus - it complained that the executable had been modified, and looking at the exe with an hex editor I found the Signature "At the grave of Grandma..." In the file. A quick search with a manually defined search pattern using f-prot revealed that nearly every executable on my PC was infected. At least my efforts were able to protect a lot of people from the same fate when I reported back to that guy.
