  • "The commission includes the human rights and counter-extremism activist Sara Khan, the former West Midlands mayor Andy Street, Laura Marks, the chair of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, the former Green party leader Caroline Lucas, and the activist Tim Montgomerie, of Reform UK."

If you're trying to work out who's dividing the country maybe start with asking why you're inviting a representative from the party who's doing just that?!

  • Slashing 10% of your workforce annually is something Jack Welch thought of when he was CEO of General Electric; essentially it shifts that 10% of staff overhead cost straight to profits per year.

The justification they give for the figure is that it's the lowest performing 10% according to internal key performance indicator (KPI) metrics. What this effectively does is two fold:

    1. Anyone who's focusing on delivering stuff the company needs long term isn't always or sometimes never will produce nice neat KPIs that can be measured along with the rest of the company. This means these people are under constant pressure and can often get swept up in the firings.

    2. It makes KPIs, a measuring tool, the target which as any statistician will tell you that when you make the measurement a target it ceases to be a good measuring tool. Because everyone is automatically incentivised to deliver KPIs NOT the actual company deliverables that generate the added value and therefore the profit.

This means after 5 to 10 years of this cycle all that's left of the company's institutional knowledge is how to deliver for KPIs and the sycophants who best adapt to this reality. You get a hollowing out of the company.

If this AI fuelled trend keeps up then companies like Cisco and Meta will eventually implode at some point.

  • I dunno I seem to recall this one chap who definitely was and a couple who'd fit the definition better trying to get elected.

  • 🎵 We're not going to make it!

No! We're not gonna make it!

We're not going to make it, anymoooore! 🎵

  • It won't just make the USA irrelevant in the oil domain: it'll impact the entirety of the OPEC group who'll have to massively scale back production to keep the price high enough to sustain their economies.

The petro-dollar will be replaced with the electro-dollar (that is if the US dollar remains the world currency). So a different group of rare earth rich countries will emerge that'll become more relevant than OPEC in the energy domain but not quite to the same extent as countries that are both gifted with geography to make them major energy exporters and have neighbouring countries/super-grid connections/renewable storage export capabilities will emerge as big players as well.

  • It's almost like categorisation is a social and language technology that keeps getting applied because it helps communicate concepts without having to spend the first half of the conversation redefining all your terms.

If common definitions described by a collective in a list is authoritarian, does this make dictionaries authoritarian as well?

  • Both heavy and light oil will still be needed for other processes and products that can't be replaced/way more difficult to replace than fuels. But decoupling oil from energy and transportation will have a huge impact on the market and be better for everyone in general.

  • (shakes Klear's hand): thank you for falling for the set-up.

(shakes username_1's hand): and thank you for the delivering the punchline.

  • I want to buy one just so I can do custom sound effects:

Use the accelerometer to detect when in free fall and play the Goofy falling scream then, on impact, cut it off and play the GTA "Wasted" sound effect.

  • If you won the lottery I imagine you'd be able to hire a lawyer to sort that out and agree payment terms that say transfer of cash happens after winnings have been collected.

  • Sorry, best thing to do is follow the old advice:

"Hope and fight for the best, plan and prepare for the worst."

  • The piece missing is that unless exposed to critical thinking in education religious organisations will fill the void with blind faith. I'd bet a 1000 in whatever currency you'd prefer that these chuckle-fucks are praying for god to save them from the rising water levels.

The current most likely path is 2.5 degrees Celsius global temperature increase which will lead to water shortages, crop failure, and at least a billion dead globally from food collapse, and possibly millions will be killed from regional wars and the massacre of climate migrants; eco-fascist authoritarianism is now likely to be the political reality for the next 100 years.

  • From the moment I understood the weaknesses of my flesh, it disgusted me!

  • We've got a lot of them, if there's one thing the Victorians loved more than industrialisation and traditions from the history of England, it was importing architecture and decoration from ancient history of Greece and Rome.

  • I would also like to know as well.

  • Indeed, if you don't let them tire themselves out then both will instead jump on you as the sudden uniting factor.

This principle applies to all nerds both IRL and online threads.

  • And the media pouring petrol on the situation because fear and anger generates the most engagement so that advertisers of the products the general public is panic buying continue to pay just enough to the corporate "journalists" to keep the publishing machine running whilst they convince themselves that 3 years of university education to write editor mandated barely-above-AI-slop articles is fulfilling the noble duty of "keeping people informed".
