Excel modeller, juggler, geek, engineer, DIY nut. Woke=thoughtful, considerate and empathetic. All views are my own.

  • Neither very much. Python won't change. Excel when running in the cloud will become more powerful, but the workbooks using Python will also be incompatible with desktop versions of Excel. At least that's what I'm understanding so far.

  • I'd like to see it. VBA is actually brilliant, you can make very very portable applications with intuitive user input and output interfaces (i.e. a cell range in Excel, and and version of tables and graphs you like as outputs)... But realistically who wants to use BASIC these days?I usually say it in jest, but I'm not sure there is actually a better RAD (rapid application development) platform out there than Excel (with a bit of VBA as needed).

  • Python with a freaking powerful GUI built in. Yes please!

  • A good map is simple. This shows one measure very clearly. Adding another dimension would likely make the core purpose harder to interpret.

There is an age old adage "All maps lie" - which is basically another way of saying simplification is key to useful presentation. ...aerial photos aren't very useful for navigation!

  • The problem is there are tipping points. Some global warming leads to increased forest fires leads to fewer trees and more CO2 = more global warming....and/orglobal warming leads to less polar and high altitude snow+ice and since snow reflects the sun's heat, less ice = more global warming.

4 degrees warming quite likely makes 6 degrees inevitable.

  • ???I'll just presume you agree with everything I said since you didn't mention any aspect of it.

  • Yep, there is a good reason the median average is usually used when looking at incomes.

  • Except at it's core chromium is open source, and I can't see the FOSS community embracing the idea. The French also wouldn't be able to fully limit access to unrestricted browsers.

It's an all round dumb idea. Much easier and more effective to tell ISPs to do the blocking.

  • While some of what your say is true, the examples you give are not good ones. The Amazon example has far more to do with EU/US data residency requirements (e.g. GDPR), and practicalities about how things like local taxes are treated. In games it has more to do with latency and ping times and also you don't want 10,000 people waiting for one particular mob to spawn because of a quest or drop.

  • You can already send images as an attachment and it doesn't compress or change the file in anyway.

  • The API hasn't been enabled on kbin.social yet. Until that update gets 'pulled' the app can't work with kbin.social. Harielle has enabled the API early on her own kbin instance so the app can be used and tested.

  • They tweaked a few things in the back end when this was discussed a few days ago. I think that did result in everybody being logged out once or twice, but my experience is it's been better since then.

  • I think this instance would have to be aware of the post, so either

    • Somebody on kbin.social would have to have followed the user who made the post; or
    • A there needs to be direct mention of a user or a magazine here (along the lines of @ random@ kbin.social) in the post.

Once this instance knows about the post I think, yes, it can appear in the Microblog tab.

  • Sure. I don't know anyone on firefish, but this is dansup of pixlfed on that platform:https://kbin.social/u/@dansup@pixelfed.social/postsIf you want to see posts from somebody on another platform just search them, something like "@ dansup@ pixelfed.social" (without the spaces) and follow them. From then on you should be able to see their posts (note you won't be able to see old posts, just any new ones from when you followed them onwards).

  • Just spread the word and I'll be happy!

  • Yes I was also thinking along those lines. When you create a magazine you can choose hastags to associate with it, I briefly considered whether you could create a magazine specifically to have interesting hashtags for you - problem with that is you end up modding the magazine and anybody can see it, join it and post.

I suspect what you describe might come later, it feels like a natural progression from what we have now.

  • This is true, but twitter also has an opaque algorithm to choose what appears in your feed. By default Mastodon only allows you to view your feed in chronological order, so there is an argument to make that kbin allows a more twitter like experience...

I do also get there is a steeper learning curve with kbin, and it's basically still only an alpha release (it's clearly not going to be right for everyone).

  • Same old. Just follow specific users by copying their full ID (e.g. @Teppic @kbin.social without the space) onto the search on Mastodon and follow as normal.

We should perhaps use hashtags more here because that would would be another way for Mastodon users to find/follow kbin content.

Going the other way to contribute to a kbin magazine from Mastodon, If you want the post to appear in a particular magazine, simply mention it in the post content, for example, "@fediverse @kbin.social" (no space) Note it will appear in the Microblog section.

  • Slight asside, there are other features being tested on smaller instances out there, for example https://kglitch.social/ has nice a implementation of collapsible comment trees. Again this is something which will probably find it's way into the core kbin code before too long.
