  • Fitting perfectly into an economy airliner seat is 10/10, the once every 3-4 years that I do that. But cars have their own issues when you're below the average size: Bad sightlines, arm rests too high, seatbelts that saw at your throat for the whole trip rather than cross your shoulder, increased injury and mortality rates because of those seatbelts and airbags, which are optimized for taller drivers, controls out of reach, and such.

  • It's like white privilege (but obviously less profound): The benefits are in what doesn't happen to you: No jokes about your height. No failed job interviews. No romantic difficulties because of your height. People don't constantly interrupt, or act like you're not even there. That kind of thing.

  • What kind of idiot takes a gun into a high-crime area? Great way to end up mugged or killed for your gun.

  • As the top official, you'd think he'd be in a position to improve it, so to speak.

  • Lives > property.

  • Drivers hate everybody. Driving is a miserable experience that makes people dissociated, stressed, and angry. In my experience, it's especially true of the people who proclaim the loudest that they love driving. Rather, they love some idealized mental picture of what they think driving should be, but never can be. The dissonance sends 'em into a state of fury.

  • Electric bike regulations are getting out of hand, largely because lawmakers don't seem to grasp the difference between pedelecs (e-assist for pedals) and e-mopeds (with a throttle control and sometimes pedals that are merely vestigal).

  • Yes, I got a re-manufactured brake caliper from a chain auto parts shop last autumn. It leaked, so I let a shop deal with it when I took the vehicle in for other work. They couldn't stop the leak, so they got another, identical one. It also leaked.

They had to get a caliper from NAPA, instead, so I have mismatched brake parts. (Not a real big deal; they work.)

  • Rumination is a form of anxiety. As such, the 5-4-3-2-1 technique is a great way of letting those intrusive thoughts go.

  • Hey, I think I cracked it, folks!

Central to all of this, unsurprisingly, are councils’ shrivelled post-austerity budgets, and the ever-increasing challenge of keeping road networks up to scratch when their other statutory obligations such as special needs.

Turns out, roads are really bloody expensive.

  • When were MAGAs ever free speech advocates? The whole "freeze peach" thing was about mocking how unserious they were about it.

  • Along those lines: If somebody sends a "friendly reminder," you know that they had the unfriendly kind in mind. Otherwise, they'd just send a reminder.

  • Is this a common problem for Bri'ish men?

  • I'm not from Seattle, but the clues tell me that this is 4th Avenue N. (OpenStreetMaps has the cycle track, Google Maps does not yet.) Probably you'd do the same thing as before the change: Use the parking lot that's on the left side of the image. It appears that none of the angle-parking spots that were removed were van-accessible. Most notably, the aerial imagery shows that the 7-11 across the street has an accessible spot with space marked for van unloading.

  • Well, yes, exactly. A nation cannot remain an economic superpower by frittering away its wealth on expensive, but suboptimal shit like a "highway" for high-speed buses. If it's no longer able able to build effective, cheap infrastructure because it doesn't benefit an entrenched industry, then collapse isn't far off.

  • We can comprehend just fine. There's a project, California High Speed Rail, under construction to connect these two cities. The trouble is that our political and economic systems have become so sclerotic that China has built an entire HSR network since work on this line began, and it won't even be done before 2031.

We can still build highways, because the political and regulatory mechanisms to create them were fine-tuned as the system crystalized into inflexibility.

Frankly, this exact inability of U.S. society to change and adapt to new conditions was the signal indicator of the incipient collapse, for me.

  • I support the death penalty for private equity executives.

  • True, the turkeys, sandhill cranes, and seagulls browse the bare soil, so at least some animals benefit. I'm thinking about it from the perspective of somebody who sees green crop plants and thinks it's healthful nature. The empty fields provide a better visual indication of the actual devastation caused by industrial ag.
