  • That's true, but they still serve different purposes, i.e. r/pcgaming is specific. Using that example, it's not like we have r/gaming2 which serves the exact same purpose as r/gaming, and has a similar size user base.

I think things will settle as you say, but this isn't a good start when the user base is exploding. I'm only just getting my head around it all and I'm a fairly tech minded person for someone who doesn't work in the field. Something like this is just going to put a lot of people off, which is a shame.

  • I think fragmentation is more susceptible on Lemmy due to the instance design, i.e. there are unlimited instances on Lemmy, each with multiple communities ("subreddits"), but only one instance on Reddit. So there could be 100 c/gaming on Lemmy, but only one r/gaming on Reddit.

It could just be the subreddits I'm subscribed to, but I don't have any fragmentation on there. The most fragmentation I have is something like r/games (discussion) and r/gaming (pictures), so they serve different purposes.

Maybe we are just seeing teething issues on Lemmy right now though, but seeing something like this is disappointing (spoken from someone who is on neither instance).

    EDIT: spelling

  • Just reading through this post, I think it would be good for Lemmy to have a feature that shows users when writing a comment or post that it won't be seen by users on X instance (in case lemmy.world users are not aware that beehaw.org has defederated them).

If they still go though with the comment or post, it would have an icon that if you hover over/click on it, it shows the communities that have defederated them or what the effect is (X users can't see this post, Y users are not seeing the "True" post etc.)

I don't think I'm explaining it well, but there needs to be some visual indication so anyone on any instance knows that a certain comment or post isn't being seen by users of a certain instance or whatever - or maybe that isn't feasible as there are certain instances that everyone would block.

  • Huh, that didn't take long. Lemmy doesn't have legs if this is the start of things (community fragmentation).

  • Relay does this well:

  • This is the correct answer.

  • It's a 2 day blackout for god's sake, and it's nearly at the end of it! Was it really necessary to do that?

  • The links under section 1 link to Reddit, may be an idea to host those elsewhere?

EDIT: I missed the link at the bottom, looks like it's all on rentry.co

  • Interesting, but 4/8 of the games you list are remakes/rereleases.

  • The post is over a month old, more like good timing to bring this to people's attention now haha.

  • I just downloaded the APK from GitHub and it let me update it from the .32 version I installed via Izzyondroid - from the limited knowledge I have it's because the fingerprint of the apps are the same.

Does this mean it won't be an issue when Izzyondroid has .33, i.e. it will detect I've already installed it?

Thanks for all your hard work by the way. A good quality app is such an important thing to have in place to get people to use Lemmy. Reddit works perfectly fine on desktop via RES but the reality is most people browse it on their phone, hence all the drama at the moment.

  • Bought a 144hz 1440p monitor a couple years ago so I really need to upgrade my RX580, but I got fed up with GPU prices so just got a PS5 to tide me over.

  • I'm currently using Jerboa with my lemmy.one account.

  • I know why they are doing it, but I was wondering more about the timing. These have all been around for years but it seems recently there is a sudden push to remove third party apps.

Is there a new technology coming out, a new law, or as @orbit@beehaw.org says is it just CEOs copying each other?

  • I suppose, especially when there is money to be made and/or saved.

  • Reddit, YouTube, Twitter - it seems like all companies want to suddenly shut down third party apps. Coincidence or is there something larger at play here?

  • Post preview would be good as well. I'll explain how it works on Relay.

As I type this the top half of the screen is your comment that I am replying to, as soon as I type any formatting, e.g. this, it changes to preview what my comment will look like. I can swipe right on it to return back to your comment I'm replying to and left to view the comment preview. Note that if I don't add any formatting I can still swipe left on your comment to preview my post.

  • Reddit is all I've known for the past 12 years, this honestly just sucks. Started off with Bacon Reader and then moved to Relay. These apps frankly make Reddit so this is the death of Reddit for me and many others.

I hope Lemmy works out, I think the migration from Reddit to Lemmy (or alternative) is going to be much more difficult than it was from Digg to Reddit. Let's hope it goes as smoothly as possible.

  • Yeah I've been subbed to him since around 2012/13. Used to watch his Binding of Issac on and off where the banter was top tier as he got so good at the game it was all muscle memory.

I now watch his Super Auto Pets videos on and off as well which has replaced the Binding of Issac content.

In both cases he put out more content than I can consume so I'll always have content to watch.

They stopped in December just gone, but here is a site where playlists have been made for all the YouTube content.

  • All sorted thanks, it just wasn't on 0.0.32 at the time of making my comment when I was manually refreshing the repo.
