  • It's just that my model is a newer generation Dell and I've heard from multiple people that Dell is getting more and more locked down and proprietary like Apple, so im thinking that's why I haven't had the best linux experience on this darn thing.

  • Oh no, I couldn't care less about graphics, but at the same time I don't want a potato lol so no Nvidia for me

  • Ok I have always heard Latitudes and thinkpads up to a certain model or generation are good for Linux

  • Thanks, will check out

  • ahh i think my dell xps 13 has a higher DPI and I always run Xorg or X11 or whatever it's called

  • Nix has intrigued me, a bit of a learning curve though. maybe i'll dive in further

  • I have read a little bit about this interesting distro. Haven't explored it much, though have read a ton of negative and mixed reviews. Isn't Rhino Linux sorta similar?

  • thanks, I'm currently on Debian 12 and tried the whole tasksel method and it's really neat and all, but it still doesn't separate all the DE's. they are all mish mashed and intermingled with each other's software.

  • the issue I've found is that the software that comes with each DE just all gets lumped together with every other installed DE, so there's obviously probably conflicting software/programs. Idk how to keep each DE separate from one another, almost containerized, so when you log into Gnome, you don't have KDE, Mate, Xfce, etc. aspects all intermingling with your Gnome environment. Idk that's how I've been seeing it

  • hey there, i tried messing with that setting multiple times and never got results. it's likely user error, but who knows

  • hey there, i have done that already with both changing themes and icons and that only affects everything else but those few icons that never change. it's very weird

  • Yea, sorry for being so vague, it's just the only way I know how to describe it. panel edit mode or whatever, because then each icon or tray all have their own settings. but anyway, every DE has their own different ways of editing panels and I honestly don't have much XFCE experience, so maybe that's why it's been more difficult for me to figure out.

  • I must either be way over thinking things or my fwupd is wrong. I've actually seen errors that fwupdmgr was not working. Maybe it has to with my firewall? Idk

  • so with these laptops, basically the only linux option is ubuntu based distros for firmware/driver updates?

  • dude how do you get firmware and driver updates via the gnome store???? I know I've seen it at least once in my life time, but it's been a long long time. I have the lvfs repo enabled, so idk what the heck is going on. and when you say they come pre-intalled with linux, is that an option you have to choose when purchsing the laptop?

  • I changed the charging option in bios to "primarily use AC" or something along those lines, so hoping that helps prevent possible problems

  • I have a hunch that the lvfs and updmgr setup is wrong. I just never receive any updates using those methods even though eveything appears to be configured correctly. I even looked at the firmware update history via fwupdmgr and it says there is no history, so pretty much I never received an update via that system. idk

  • I just feel personally that building the Arch OS would be too complicated for me, that's why I'm considering Manjaro. much more user friendly

  • yea i'm just about ready to invest in a new computer. the damn usb-c ports are so unreliable too after years of wear and tear. things disconnect just by the slightest shift in cable.
