  • And can we not consider that each of us can so arrange his own particular life so as to make it meaningful to himself and to those he influences? And in that case does not all of life and all the Universe come to have meaning to him?

Surely it is those who find their own lives essentially meaningless who most strive to impose meaning on the Universe as a way of making up for the personal lack.

    --Isaac Asimov, Knock Plastic!, 1989

  • In the current timeline, in the current atmosphere, if I can agree with someone 50.1% of the time, that's good enough for now. After we get literal fucking fascists out of power we can have a debate about if Grannie and Grampa renting out their guest cottage to finance their diabetes medications count as the same kind of landlords and deserve the same amount of vitriol as Blackstone.

  • I'm not sure exactly which kind of diagnosable disorder that furry has, but I'm convinced they have one and it's profound.

  • Sega applied for and was awarded U.S. Patent 6,200,138 – "Game display method, moving direction indicating method, game apparatus and drive simulating apparatus" – in 2001. The mechanics in the "138 patent" describe an arcade cabinet similar to Sega's previous arcade game Harley-Davidson & L.A. Riders (1997), but also describe the arrow navigation system and pedestrian avoidance aspects that were used in Crazy Taxi.

In 2001, Electronic Arts and Fox Interactive released The Simpsons: Road Rage, which reviews identified as being clearly inspired by the gameplay of Crazy Taxi. In this game, the player controlled one of The Simpsons characters as they drive around Springfield, bringing passengers to these destinations in a way like in Crazy Taxi. In December 2001, Sega brought Fox Entertainment, Electronic Arts, and developer Radical Games Ltd. to court over this infringement of the 138 patent. The case, Sega of America, Inc. v. Fox Interactive, et al., was settled in private for an unknown amount. The 138 patent is considered to be one of the most important patents in video game development.

  • Scenario 1: It is difficult, but not impossible to free the man from his chains or otherwise disrupt the functions of the trolley. You can eventually save him, so switching the trolley to his track is morally correct.

Scenario 2: The man cannot be freed from the track, the trolley will never stop running him over, and his suffering will never end. From a purely mathematical standpoint, he will eventually experience more suffering than the mortals tied to the track, so it would be more moral to allow the trolley to kill them and end their suffering immediately. ON THE OTHER HAND, if he's immortal and can't be freed, he will also experience infinite suffering just from being forever tied to an empty track, so it's arguably no different if he's being run over or not, so it would be more moral to give him the trolley and then let the other people go free so they can go out and enjoy their lives.

    Core concept, really.

  • There's a facet of Xanatos that puts him into the top tier of villains: he never seeks revenge. At some point nearly every character in Gargoyles goes out looking to get revenge on someone who wronged them, but Xanatos just keeps on trying to make himself powerful and immortal and not letting himself get wrapped around the axle trying to destroy the main characters. Shredder, Lex Luthor, Voldemort, Joker... so many villains are defined by their obsessive fixation on their heroes. Not Xanatos, because he's too fucking cool to be bothered.

  • Similar experience, though I think my mom was just white-knuckling her way through being a single mom with two kids, so she didn't have a lot left over to pursue her passions and share that with us. That, and her father was a monster, so my grandmother was doing her own white-knuckle process a generation prior. I'm trying to make myself more emotionally available to my kid, because I'd like to reduce the generational trauma, but it's going to make for an interesting conversation someday.
