  • My "nostalgia favorites" will always be Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Sonic 2 (Genesis version). Sonic 2 is just so fun to go back and play any time I want a quick retro sides rolling platformer fix, and I've played through it more times than I can count. OoT was the first game I played that showed me what games could be through a combination of story/cutscenes and gameplay, as someone who was never able to get my hands on an SNES to play the epic JRPGs of the console growing up (I loved my Genesis, but let's be real, those kinds of games on Sega consoles didn't really come until later).

Nowadays Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have eclipsed OoT for me, and for other more modern games another standout fave is Fire Emblem Three Houses, due in large part to its story and setting having everything I look for in a game, and its characters actually being more fleshed out and developed than the one-note units handed to you in many other games in the franchise. Engage has more... Engaging gameplay (sorry not sorry for the pun) but the story and characters hold it back quite a bit for me. Gameplay-wise, my favorite strategy RPG actually has to be Triangle Strategy, in that it has quite creative maps and every unit is designed with the potential to be useful depending on how you approach your own strategy, but I like the story/characters of Three Houses at least a bit more, and I tend to value story more in general in games. I'm also a big fan of the Ace Attorney franchise for the overarching story, characters and writing that it's built up through its history. Phoenix, Maya, Edgeworth, Apollo and friends are all among some of my favorite characters in gaming, and I'm glad I decided long ago to give that quirky-seeming series a try. AA7 when, Capcom?

  • The RAM usage of Akonadi was my one big complaint with using the Kontact apps. With Thunderbird going a similar sketchy way to Firefox, I might have to take a look at Kontact again.

  • Yeah, I'm betting on at least a new 3D Mario too. Wouldn't be surprised if Z-A was cross generation. Maybe the new Mario Kart they showed off in the short trailer. I don't think Prime 4 will be out right at launch but I could see it in the first year.

  • I notice they tend to have one "killer app" and then the rest of it isn't much to write home about, at least since the N64 (SNES had a whopping 2: F-Zerp and Mario World). The exception being the Wii U, which had... Nintendo Land? NSMB-U? Nothing really.

N64: Mario 64 (and had almost literally nothing else until StarFox) GameCube: Luigi's Mansion Wii: Twilight Princess, or Wii Sports, since TP also released for GameCube Switch: BotW

  • I'm thinking that too. He had a good amount of help last season from a head coach with a talent for developing QBs, an elite receiving corps, and an OL that, while league average, was still likely better than what Seattle offers. He's really gonna have to step it up on his own to replicate last season's success.

  • Last weekend was the first time in 2 months that I actually played a game for more than just a quick test to see if graphics were working on my PC. Something in a game gave me an unexpected emotional response that didn't feel right and caused me to just not play games for a while. I uninstalled thst game and stopped playing it. I'm feeling somewhat better now but the response was just a symptom of bigger issues I'm planning on getting help for.

As for what I did play last weekend, I did a bit of level/money grinding in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. It's a big difficulty spike between Romaria and the pyramid and I got to the pyramid very under-leveled and underequipped. The grind is a slog though because monsters in the overworld don't give out much XP. That said they do give decent money so maybe you're supposed to rely more on items and equipment to get you through. Hopefully I don't have to grind TOO much more to feel comfortable venturing back in farther than the first few rooms.

  • Sadly, I've seen how much the average non-tech enthusiast LOVES all this AI stuff. Like, people's parents/grandparents who only occasionally use a computer when they have to. The types of folks who will call tech support and actually need the answer, "Is your computer powered on?" And there are far more people out there like that than many tech folks think. That's the market that keeps powering this stuff.

  • On the other hand, it's not likely that it would have been difficult for Nintendo to get or extend the license to keep the game on the service if they wanted to. I figure that if they're already discontinuing gold points, this is probably the first baby step towards winding down Switch Online on the original Switch in prep for the Switch 2. It would really help to have a launch date announced for the new console though.

  • Probably the most legit scared I ever was in a video game, and I was 13.That, and Half-Mummified Gibdo Dad popping out of the wardrobe in Majora's Mask.

  • You should be able to add the LibreWolf repository on Ubuntu, if they don't have an Ubuntu one the Debian one should work. It's how I got it on a Fedora based distro (using the Fedora repo).

  • Mull development has been abandoned. You might want to switch to IronFox, the community's fork to continue its legacy.

  • I keep Firefox around only for those very few sites I encounter, such as MLB.TV and my student loan servicer's site, that will rarely if ever function properly in privacy respecting browsers. But 90+ percent of my browsing is done on LibreWolf.

    • KDE Connect
    • IronFox: fork/successor to the defunct Mull browser
    • OSMAnd~
    • AntennaPod
    • Transistor: for internet radio
    • Any music app, they're all good; I'm currently using Symphony
    • Jerboa: for Lemmy
  • I personally vastly prefer mutable distros for my own system, but I understand the appeal for those who like them. As long as mutable distros remain an option I don't mind immutable distros.

  • And then Rare claimed they were continuing the memory-maxing shenanigans with DK 64 requiring the Expansion Pack to play, but it was really only to fix one bug that would be hard to run into but would break the game without it. The Expansion Pack does very little to nothing for the game otherwise. According to some former Rare devs they could've fixed the bug without needing the Expansion Pack but they decided to require it anyway.

  • More of an anomaly than it is today, TBH. The console stores and Steam really do not care anymore what goes up on their shop, as long as they can see even a little $$$ from it. Porn games on the eShop and Steam are rampant.

  • Back in those times gaming was still seen as mainly a kid's hobby by most, so I would almost guarantee Conker fooled a lot of parents (didn't fool mine, though), especially being on the N64 and starring a "cute" squirrel as the main protagonist. I would actually argue, though, that parents cared a good deal more then than they do now. Night Trap and Mortal Kombat almost got games censored by the US government in the early 90s, and they'd be seen as quaint now. We've had a ratings system for 30 years and more underage kids than ever are probably playing adult oriented games today. An M rating is just what marketers need to sell their game to the junior high market because parents are ignorant and retailers just want the money, doesn't matter from where.

  • Mint or Pop_OS are likely the most widely recommended distros I know of for beginners. I haven't tried either of them myself, but from what I hear about them I'm inclined to agree. Personally I would NOT recommend a rolling release distro to beginners. Too much potential to break things way too easily and way too often, which would likely require digging into the terminal to fix. Terminal-averse beginners wouldn't be served well by that at all.
