  • I wasn't talking about fiber, but the sugars bound to fiber. Its very hard to accurately labele just the bioavailable calories, even if you account for things like fiber.

On the note of genetics, it's not just about metabolism. People have different abilities to even absorb the same calories. People have food intolerances, different rates at which they move food through the digestive tract, and different intestinal permeability.

This isn't meant as an excuse to eat junk and not pay attention to your food. But, I actually find more help in paying attention to food quality and listening to how your body interacts with different food. E.g., eat less processed food, be aware that eating fat slows digestion, pay attention to your intolerances, stop eating when full, cut out snacking (again, especially processed foods). If you do this, its very likely you won't need to count at all.

That's not to say that, if calorie counting works for you, then you shouldn't do it. Its just not the end all be all people act like it is. Pretty much any diet and paying more attention to what you eat in any way works: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32238384/

  • Eh. Calories are... Tricky. What is a calorie? A unit of food which, when burned, will heat a gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. But your body isnt just a furnace, it's complex. And everyone is physiologically different - we aren't all running at the same efficiency (base metabolism). And not all calories are available. For example, fiber is not digestable and can't be absorbed by the digestive system and it also associates with simple sugars which also prevents them from being properly absorbed. So, eating whole fruits will result in absorbing less sugar than drinking juice which has the same total amount of sugar. Processing food - even just cooking it - makes calories more bioavailable.

For sure it can conceptually be boiled down to calories effectively absorbed and calories burned. But digging into what that actually means can actually be quite tricky.

  • ?

  • Biden himself ran for president and won on the third shot. But, since two woman ran for president and lost, thats a sign that no woman can get elected.

Its not that women can't win. Its that centrist dems than run on the status quo when the Democratic party is polling abysmally can't win.

  • DivestOS used to be the bomb. Super secure. Monthly updates. Super private. Ran on tons of hardware. But it was run by 1 guy and he recently dropped the project. Which is fair, it was a lot of free labor and donations weren't paying the bills, but so sad :(

  • I have a FP 4 that is just starting to get screen burn. I will probably just replace the screen soon to be honest and keep using it.

  • /e/OS is good, I also use Calyx with MicroG and all of my bank apps work.

  • I grew up in rural america in a tourist town. We hated the tourists. Wealthy. Arrogant. Rude. Unaware of local customs. Drove up rent and grocery prices.

But, at the end of the day, we were the only town within an hour radius that wasn't crumbling. All those vacation homes paid property taxes and the school system was great. There were jobs for people.

There are a lot of issues with unregulated tourism and immigration. But it's better to regulate the issues and keep up with fostering good job markets and building government controlled affordable housing instead of try and ban a chunk of your economy. Which, from this limited article, it seems like the government is trying to do.

  • Big warning on moving to Brazil for science. Getting lab materials takes forever to get delivered and frequently just never arrives. I had a roommat do her last year of PhD research in the us because work was so much faster here due to how much better and more reliable logistics are.

  • Pretty much this. Met him once. He's has no scandals, he's just kind of a rude guy.

I had a friend tell a story once about how he was on a field trip and the class found out Bill Nye was in the building. But once Bill found out kids were on the way he escaped out a window to avoid them. I'm not sure how true that is, but its kinda funny.

  • I'm living in Europe and all my debt is in USD. The collapse of the dollar is pretty bitter sweet.

  • You can learn a lot of languages with eternity.

  • I put calyx on mine. It was super easy.

  • Because i live on the 4th floor of an apartment complex... i guess anything is possible, but sneaking out several doors and back would be impressive.

  • Like everyone else said, pixels are the best phones for non stock OS. You can unlock them easy and they are quick to release security updates so the open source security nerds who made graphene OS (the best open source OS) love pixel phones.

  • The problem with newer Samsung (post 2021 is update) is they don't allow you to unlock the bootloader (at least for US phones). This pretty much squashes your ability to put a new OS on it.

  • DivestOS is no longer maintained, RIP. Long live Calyx.

  • I don't know what you're trying to argue here. Do you want my opinion? The opinion of Christians? The opinion of people who view nature to be god?

In my opinion, no. Obviously not. But I also am not a Christian.
