    Jim Jones staged fake assassination attempts on his own life to foster a paranoid, "us-vs-the-world" mentality, manipulate followers into unwavering loyalty, and justify tighter security measures. These fabricated events often involved gunfire, with Jones claiming enemies were attacking, strengthening his control as followers became "fearful" and dependent on him for safety.

    Jones would arrange for phony gunfire or incidents during services to create a false sense of danger.

    These actions kept members in a state of fear and dependency, preparing them for the eventual, real mass murder-suicide of November 18, 1978.

People are tired of the oppressive status quo, regardless of whose mouth it's coming out of.
