  • It's absent in the biologist sure, she is driven by curiosity, and the loss of her partner.

    But the Director? She saw numerous highly skilled people enter the are without returning, but still thought she could somehow make a difference and ultimately understand what area x is.

    Lowry still thinks it's something he could, and only him could deal with, so he keeps messing with the missions and has everyone brainwashed.

    Control atleast starts out thinking he has the reigns in hand, but he atleast begins to understand how ununderstandable the situation is to him.

    But to be honest, i found it really hard to get anything from the books where i could say: "yeah, that's definitely something this is about" it has many themes and layers and it's just so thoroughly weird that i am not really sure about anything i experienced reading it.

  • Been a while since i read the southern reach trillogy, but i guess the biggest theme for me was human hubris, to think that we are actually in control and understand this huge world we live in.

    Other than that, it's also a damn beautiful horror trip.

  • Most clients are web browsers and support for torrents in http is the same as for every other file.

    So that would only give us a use for torrents as a form of content distribution plattform to get the actual files closer to the client.

    In cases where we have actual non browser clients: i like to curate what i am distributing and don't want to distribute anything i happen stumble upon or would you be willing to store and more importantly share everything you find on 4chan or that might show up in your mastodon feed?

  • En Garde! Nice indie game, with a combat system simmiliar to sekiro, but very lighthearted presentation. Also started paradise killer. Definitely interesting, but not sure if it's a game for me

  • Not to aware of how c# works, or interested in defending java, especially ancient java versions, but what does it do better in that regard?

    Only records for more or less pure data objects come to mind, but those are also in modern Java.

  • Access control and offering a sound interface.

    You don't need getters and setters if every attribute is public, but you might want to make sure attributes are accessed in a specific way or a change to an object has to trigger something, or the change has to wait until the object is done with something. Java just has tools to enforce a user of your objects to access its attributes through the methods you designed for that. It's a safeguard against unintended side effects, to only open up inner workings of a class as littles as necessary.

    In a language without something like private attributes you'd have to account for far more ways someone might mutate the state of objects created by your code, it opens you up to far more possible mistakes.

  • You let your ide generate simple getters and setters or utilize something that generates them during a compilation process.

    Who ever writes them per hand needs to utilize their tooling better or needs better tooling.

  • Das gewicht vom orignial pfostierer großzügig zu runden könnte heißen, dass man davon ausgeht, dass er unter 100kg wiegt, man aber für die einfachere Rechnung einfach 100kg veranschlagt.

    Oder es ist großzügig das der original pfostierer nur auf 100kg geschätzt wird.

  • I think i have roughly three categories for this.

    Needs: i need food/ my meds/ a train ticket to get to work

    Wants: stuff that i want for me beyond the needs, e.g. hobby stuff like a tripod if one is into photography or dinner in a nice restaurant from time to time

    Desires: stuff thats purely for pleasure. Like candy, or a new phone if the old one is still working or very expensive hobby related material, like that carbon tripod with all the bells and whistles, or material i allready own plenty of, like video games.

    Asking myself if something is still a want vs a desire stopped some impulse buys, but this desires very very tempting

  • Ich hab's auf reddit schonmal gesagt und ich sags hier wieder: der grund wieso ich niemals im Handwerk arbeiten wollte ist mein Vater, seines Zeichens Dachdecker gewesen, und zu sehen wie der sich mit Rücken und Knieproblemen geqüalt hat. Hätte der noch n bisschen länger als "normaler" Dachdecker gearbeitet, statt Lehrgänge und Beratungen in dem Bereich machen zu können hät er sich vermutlich vom Dach geworfen.

    Und mein Vater war eigentlich gerne aufm Dach, aber das man sich da buchstäblich kaputt arbeitet, war viel zu aktzeptiert und wurde im Grunde auch vom Chef verlangt.

  • Kbin and lemmy are still relatively small things, so it's hard to get a steady flow of content in more niche communities and there is allways the real possibility that multiple communities exist for a specific topic, but their members are unaware of the others.

    But yeah, i'd enjoy specialized single game communities, hell i especially miss the various magic the gathering communities.
