  • For some reason people seem to experience the most rage, vocalization frustration, etc. when it comes to having their entertainment fucked with (whether pricing, content itself, etc). Companies can cause global recession or market crashes, be responsible for child labor resulting in death and dismemberment, or engage in flat out fraud, but those companies will never bring out the toxicity, death threats, entitlement, and communal anger like a video game or film/tv company that impacts the entertainment of the masses. When people used to think of the most evil company in America back in the early 2010's, EA was more hated than Bank of America, Wells Fargo, or AIG. That never made sense to me.

  • I have no problem discussing political opinions. I hate how every thread gets co opted by un critical hot takes for the circle jerk of up votes. It's frustrating that any post about digital media has the top comments all saying "Yarrrr, time to sail the high sees." Or anytime there's any news about a corporation, the top comment seems to be "fuck capitalism and those greedy greedy share holders." Those kinds of comments aren't critical, aren't contributing to any meaningful conversation. On reddit I think it succeeded when you had communities of enthusiasts having conversations about the thing they are enthusiastic about. Lemmy seems to have a lot more people enthusiastic about a political position just try to spread that on any and all communities.

  • For me it's the over representation of self described communists that take over every thread to poetically or unpoetically just keep saying capitalism=bad and then do shit like justify bad behavior because capitalism=bad or pretend to care about making sure employees get paid while advocating for piracy of everything being justified.

  • Not crazy at all. Not sure why there's a surprise. Advertising is everywhere. Design goes into making buying goods user friendly. The whole point of brands is to build loyalty to it. All of that has cost to acquire customers. So obviously customers are an investment because acquiring them has cost and labor involved.

    It's like selling an iPhone knowing you will eventually make money on app store sales percentage margins.

  • Thank you for this reasonable and informed take. A lot of folks up in arms about the identity politics issue, but the real issue is the bureaucracy is not operating in a way that aligns with the law or instructs people to comply. Corrections should be allowed by the candidates and the bureaucracy needs to update procedures.

  • Yeah. That's why I was curious. I replied to a comment saying we need to raise penalties for layoffs to disincentivize it. But if employers are using performance as a guise to do layoff without a layoff, that might mean the layoff punishment is deterring it in a weird way.

    Sorry about your position. That sucks. When I look around at colleagues and their age, it makes me wonder if I should move to a management track instead of staying IC.

    Is it a layoff or not? It sounds like the employer is avoiding lay off penalties completely by calling it performance based.

  • Just think of all the tech bros and finance bros with their branded Patagonia vests and backpacks. $75 for federally elected leaders to have a pin that doubles as a security badge is a nothing burger, and shouldn't distract from passing of a budget which I am actually scared about.

  • 40,000 bucks for 540 people is like 75 bucks a person. It's only a big deal if folks make it a big deal to spend time debating discussing. The biggest waste is spending significant time debating this given the salaries of all members involved.

  • I think the other thing you need to highlight is that during that rapid growth phase 2 years ago it meant building up teams. In tech it really became an job market where employees had lot of the power in negotiation which drove up the cost of labor to fill this surplus of openings. I worked at a company where team members were being offered 10k to 25k annual retention bonuses to not quit (if you want quit within a certain time you pay it back, but if you quit hopefully your new employer spots you a signing bonus to cover it). But with all of the factors you mentioned in this cool down, you end up with a problem that you now have too much staff, but also too expensive staff that you can't afford. Employees are definitely losing now with the layoffs, but for the ones that were able to make job moves and survive the layoffs, they're probably are doing much better because of it (at least from a compensation POV, not sure about anxiety worrying about being laid off next).

  • I'm having trouble connecting this paragraph about US provided intelligence for targets:

    With this paragraph about how Israel selects targets:

    The Israeli military intentionally strikes Palestinian civilian infrastructure, known as “power targets,” in order to “create a shock,” according to an investigation by the Israeli news website +972 Magazine. Targets are generated using an artificial intelligence system known as “Habsora,” Hebrew for “gospel.”

    This makes it sound like US engagement is trying to identify military targets that follow some criteria of what a military target is. But Israel is doing their own thing using AI?

    Depending on how the structure is laid out and what product areas were cut, I'm guessing up to the director level would be impacted.

  • I think it's an unfair and naive assumption to think VPs all keep their jobs. I've seen some pretty nasty game of thrones plays by executive leadership during layoffs due to consolidation of teams and remits. Someone might get a bonus that doesn't deserve it, but someone is going to get let go at a high level (albeit with a generous severance not offered to the rest of the employees).

    Also, when new senior leadership comes in, it's not uncommon for them to let heads roll at the leadership level to fill out the team with folks they know or trust. I'm not shedding a tear about where those folks will go on to find similar employment, but I think there's a misconception about how safe those positions actually are.
