  • Thanks for all you do! I do devops shit for a living and I can't imagine what it's like to keep the lights on in a situation like this. I'm just really excited for what it feels like this place will become, as are so many others here.

  • From the Wikipedia article written about him:

Rothbard opposed egalitarianism and the civil rights movement, and blamed women's voting and activism for the growth of the welfare state.

Sounds like a real winner of a person. Bleh.

  • Same here! I upvote/boost a lot more than I did on Reddit, and my threshold for commenting is much lower than it used to be. Part of it is that I want this place to succeed, so I want to help it be more active. I absolutely agree that this community is smaller, friendlier, and less cynical than what we had on Reddit. That's the other part, it's really lowered my threshold of engagement.

  • I wonder if we could find/contact/contract a developer with an accessibility focus. I'm planning on leaving some moderately significant donations in a few days (damn settling periods and bank holidays making that slow), and maybe there could be a community fundraising effort to get an accessibility expert in to submit some PRs. I made a big fuss out of accessibility on Reddit in the lead up to the protest, and it feels hypocritical of me to not keep pushing for it now. Not sure if Ernest would be interested in that or not, but it seems like it might be a good idea.

  • What's accessibility like for Lemmy/kbin? I wonder if we could get an early start on accessibility with kbin, since it has a much younger codebase.

  • There is no escape from this community. In the year 2620, when the first entanglements of the interplanetary quantum fediverse occur, the scientists waiting for the start of a new era with bated breath will have the following message passed directly to their visual cortices:

    google en passant

  • Yikes, I wasn't aware of that. I'm already avoiding his videos, but I'll probably completely hide his channel on Youtube.

EDIT: Do you have a link for that video? I'm searching for it, but trying to find it without clicking on Reddit links is a pain :(

  • I'm really glad you're working on this. @hariette is making Artemis for Lemmy and kbin, and soon the world will have another app for Lemmy. More apps == more better, IMO. Your app is looking great!

  • I'll chime in and add Reddit. Once I saw the direction things were going in, I went ahead and created accounts on tildes, lemmy, and kbin (which was the order I learned of them in). Right now, I think I'm most fond of kbin, but I wanted to keep my options open.

  • Nah, this shit is confusing initially. Think of it like email. You're using gmail, but you can still see and participate in email threads sent by Outlook users. It's just that instead of emails, it's a threaded forum somewhat in the style of reddit.

  • Lemmy, kbin, and Mastodon all speak the same underlying protocol -- ActivityPub. I've found that the best way to think of it is to compare it to email. If I send you an email from my gmail account to your outlook account, it just works (well, mostly, email is a bit of a mess lol) even though the two email clients look vastly different from each other. ActivityPub (and federated protocols in general) are like email, but for twitter/reddit.

There are some different message types (it wouldn't make sense to present twitter-like content in the context of a threaded forum like Reddit), and not all instance types support all the different message types. I'm using kbin (via kbin.social) and I can see Mastodon content, but I'm not sure if Lemmy has that ability.

Not sure if that was helpful, and I hope that others come and fact check me, but that's my understanding of it.

  • I really enjoy this form of protest. The "landed gentry" is giving the users what they want. I really hope that more communities do what /r/interestingasfuck and /r/justnomil have done to deprive Reddit of its advertising revenue.

  • He can definitely speak with a lot of vitriol :/ It's why I stopped watching his videos. I'm glad he's pushing for right-to-repair stuff, but I just couldn't handle the anger and negativity.

  • That's incredibly impressive! I haven't noticed a single hitch and I've been browsing nonstop for the past hour or so.

  • While I'm glad that furries have a nice space where they can (hopefully) not be harassed, I decided I could use a bit less furry porn in my life. On kbin (on mobile, in the PWA), you can block a domain by searching for it (I think it was yiffit.net, but I can't remember), then click the kbin logo at the top right, then scroll down to where you see /d/yiffit.net, then click the little block icon. I'm sure Lemmy has the same capability, but I don't know how to do it. With that, the new feed has a lot less porn lol.

EDIT: it was yiffit.net, not furryit.net

EDIT: well, that wasn't very effective. It took 1 page to find more lol. It gives me... somewhat fond memories of browsing /r/all, sorted by new.

  • I've heard good things about Ender 3 printers and their clones if you're willing to tinker. AFAIK, the experience right out of the box isn't great, but they can be modded and upgraded over time and can be fairly capable.

That being said, those might still be too expensive depending on your geo. I seem to recall reading about reprap projects designed to be built as cheaply as possible using harvested components from things like old scanners and shit.

  • Wait, there's people making money off of this shit‽ Like, my therapist and I work on mindfulness, but for me that just means being present in my body (not escaping into books/games/videos), considering my wants and needs, and listening to my emotions (even when they're unpleasant). Is there some other definition? I like talking to people about it, but I'll have to be more specific about what I mean in the future if there's someone out there selling something.

  • TOR was started and funded by the US Naval Research Labs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it's not perfect, but I know it's widely used as a first line of defense. I won't comment on the Radio Free Asia stuff because I have no knowledge of that, but I feel like there's a lot of privacy tools we use that were initially funded by the US government, and even the US military in some cases. It always comes back to relative threat levels. Are you trying to avoid invasive corporate monitoring and some degree of government surveillance as a regular person? Signal is fine. Are you actively trying to hide from government intelligence agencies? Maybe it's not so fine. Signal is still preferable to a messaging application owned by Meta, imo.
