  • It depends. I'm working in the quant department of a bank and we work on pricing libraries that the traders then use. Since traders often use Excel and expect add-ins, we have a mostly Windows environment. Our head of CI, a huge Windows and Powershell fan, once then decided to add a few servers with Linux (RHEL) on them to have automated Valgrind checks and gcc/clang builds there to continuously test our builds for warnings, undefined behavior (gcc with O3 does catch a few of them) and stuff.

I thought cool, at least Linux is making it into this department. Then I logged into one of those servers.

The fucker didn't like the default file system hierarchy and did stuff like /Applications and `/Temp' and is installing programs by manually downloading binaries and extracting them there.

  • Got Raiden and Chevreuse after only 11 pulls, guess I used up my luck forever now 👀

EDIT: holy crap, also pulled this beauty after just 4 or 5 pulls:

  • Bad track record with their privacy invasion via their Amazon shenanigans (which Richard Stallman called the Ubuntu Spyware), the shilling of Ubuntu One cloud and now Ubuntu Pro subscriptions that are reminiscent of Microsoft's shilling of Microsoft accounts and OneDrive, Snap telemetry...

  • Have you tried to see whether it's not just simply one of your phones' WiFi chip and/or your router that are the bottlenecks here? You could host a basic HTTP server on a PC in your local network, put some big file in there, and then try to download it with your phone.

IMO LocalSend is great, I'd be really surprised if it was significantly slower than other WiFi file transfer methods.

  • Pascal is so incredibly good and simple that I was writing programs (sort of, half of the time it was gibberish) in it when I was 7 years old and what helped a lot was that at the time Turbo Pascal came with lots of cool examples/tutorials, so you could just play around with code snippets until you figure it out on your own. Those who witnessed how programming can be taught today to 7~10 year olds using JS or Python might relate, Pascal was just that simple and clean.

Delphi was also amazing, it had the same simplicity of Visual Basic to make GUI apps while featuring a much better and more rigourous language.

  • For how long did you have that battery?

  • So 82.7% left after 1.5 years, that's cool I think!

(especially given that they offer only a 12 months warranty)

  • The OEM route is tempting me too to be honest but at the same time Lenovo doesn't make those batteries anymore and those that you'll buy would have been in their storage for years.

  • Good news for bubble tea lovers

  • This feels a lot like Elons's "but, but, they tricked our algos to have them suggest those hateful tweets!"

  • Ubuntu is just Windows in Tux' clothing

  • That's a good way of maximizing technical debt.

  • The case also needs a paint job

  • Noctua gang 🤝

  • I can't help as I don't have a Pixel 8/8 Pro, and (fortunately) I haven't had to replace any part of my Pixel 7a yet. So how did the back glass replacement go?

  • Reposting a fix shared by karma_nder (https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/comment/6454158 ):

If anyone is experiencing this issue like me, you can manually change the date on your phone to 12/31/23, then open your Wear app, manually update your watch, and then change the date back to automatic. Should fix it!

  • Me when someone's Ubuntu install reaches EOL: just install Arch

  • Another really powerful Google Keep alternative is Quillpad, does basically what Google Keep does and supports Markdown and Nextcloud syncing.

  • Google Maps can be used fully offline, and with a custom ROM like GrapheneOS it's possible to cut off the internet completely once you've downloaded the maps for the locations you're interested in.
